Every year, Lund University awards scholarships to a number of new, high-achieving international students.

About the Lund University Global Scholarship programme

Each year, Lund University awards approximately SEK 20.5 million (€1.75 million / $1.85 million) in scholarship grants. This selective, merit-based scholarship programme is designed to recognise top academic students from outside the EU/EEA who are applying for degree programmes at Lund University.

As a top 100 university, ranked in the top 0.4% of universities worldwide, Lund University attracts high-achieving students globally. The Lund University Global Scholarship programme acknowledges academic excellence by offering grants to exceptional students.

The 2024 application period for the Lund University Global Scholarship has passed. The next round will open in early February 2025.

Applicants who have completed an application for an international degree programme at Lund University as their first choice will be notified by email when the scholarship application period opens. Also see 'Requirements and conditions' and 'How to apply' below.

Scholarship recipients are students with a proven track record of consistently high academic performance and a strong fit for Lund University’s programmes. The scholarship is highly selective, competitive, and based entirely on merit.

To be eligible to apply for a scholarship you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • You must be a citizen of a country from outside the EU/EEA (and Switzerland) and be required to pay tuition fees
  • You are applying in a regular application round to Master's level studies leading to a degree at Lund University, or, exceptionally, for one of the Bachelor's programmes in Development Studies, Mathematics, Physics and Physical Geography. Note that the programme at Lund University that you are applying for a scholarship for should be your first choice in your application at universityadmissions.se.

Please do not apply if:

  • You do not meet the admission requirements to Lund University
  • You have not selected a Lund University programme as your first choice at universityadmissions.se
  • You cannot secure the funding needed to cover living costs, as required by the Swedish Migration Agency

Information about living costs in Sweden

  • Grants may cover part or all of the tuition fees.
  • The percentage awarded depends on the programme/faculty budget and does not reflect the student's academic standing.
  • Scholarships cover tuition fees only – living costs are not included.

Important Note

Recipients must still meet the Swedish Migration Agency’s requirements by funding their living expenses independently.

How to apply

Please read the 'About the Lund University Global Scholarship programme' section above carefully so that you know what to do and what to expect before applying for a scholarship.

Applying for studies – required for scholarship eligibility

To be eligible for the scholarship, you must first apply to a degree programme at Lund University via the national application website www.universityadmissions.se during the relevant application period. Once you've submitted a complete application and paid the application fee, you can apply for the scholarship through the scholarship application portal. The link to the scholarship application portal will be posted on this webpage when the application period begins. You will also receive an email from us with the link.

Please note:

  • The scholarship portal is separate from the national programme application portal.
  • If you are applying to a Fine Art or Music programme or applying during the March–April round, you'll receive specific application instructions by email.

See the links below for more information.

Scholarship motivation letter

As part of your scholarship application, you will need to upload a personal 'Scholarship Motivation Letter' (maximum 600 words). This letter is distinct from any statement of purpose required for your programme application. Your motivation letter should explain why your academic achievements and reasons for applying to Lund University make you a strong candidate for the Lund University Global Scholarship.

Important notes

  • You can only apply for one Lund University Global Scholarship for the programmes you've selected during a specific application round.
  • However, you are allowed to apply for other scholarships, such as the Swedish Institute scholarships, in addition.

Selection process – based on academic merits

The selection process for scholarships runs alongside the programme/course selection. Priority is given to applicants who:

  • Demonstrate strong academic performance
  • Are assessed as a good fit for the chosen programme
  • Show a strong commitment to studying at Lund University
  • Have selected a Lund University programme/course as their first choice when applying via www.universityadmissions.se

Please note:

The scholarship is merit-based only – financial need is not considered in the selection process.
