Jubilee book highlights the history of Lund University in popular form

Book cover for "Lund University Over 350 Years - History and Stories"

In preparing for the University’s jubilee year which starts on 19 December, Lund University is now publishing a popular science book entitled “Lund University over 350 Years – History and Stories”. The book is about the University’s journey from a small provincial academy with 14 professors and 80 students to the major international university that it is today, recurrently ranked among the top 100 universities in the world.

“Lund University over 350 Years – History and Stories” is designed as a coffee table book with more than 500 pictures printed in four colour process. It depicts the major occurrences and overall trends in the University’s history, while highlighting an entire gallery of intriguing individuals and interesting events.

The book provides an insight into the development of education and research, everyday life and festivities at the university, its physical environment, student life, ideological climate, innovations, interaction with wider society, policy and organisation, libraries and museums, etc.

The main authors of the book are Björn Magnusson Staaf, Associate Professor of Archaeology and senior lecturer of Museology, and Fredrik Tersmeden, archivist at the Lund University Archives, who have written six chronological chapters on the overall history of the University. They also contribute to the shorter thematic sections of the book, otherwise written by Patrik Andersson, Katarina Bernhardsson, Dick Harrison, Håkan Håkansson, Thomas Kaiserfeld, Tom O’Dell, Sverker Oredsson and Bengt Werner. Petra Francke, communications officer at Corporate Communications at Lund University, is the editor and graphic designer of the book.

The book was written in Swedish and has been translated into English by the University’s Translation and Language Services. It is published by Lund University, and the project was initiated by the jubilee committee who organises the University’s 350th anniversary celebrations.

The book was produced thanks to generous contributions from the Hilda and Håkan Theodor Ohlsson Foundation, the Birgit and Sven Håkan Ohlsson Foundation and the Crafoord Foundation.
