What Julaina says about the Master's in Service Management, Culture and Creativity Management
Introducing Julaina
Hi! My name is Julaina and I'm the student ambassador for the Master's programme in Service Management, Culture and Creativity Management. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.
About the programme and the teaching style
Why did you choose Lund University?
"Pursuing a Master’s degree was an aspiration I aimed to fulfil, and selecting a programme that aligned with my interests was crucial. The Master’s programme in Service Management with a specialisation in Culture and Creativity Management at Lund University caught my attention, as it perfectly combines my passion for service in the non-profit sector with learning that embraces perspectives from diverse backgrounds."
What do you think of your programme so far? Does it meet your expectations?
"The programme is challenging in a way that stimulates critical thinking. Coming from a practical learning background, this programme does not exactly meet or deviate from my expectations. Instead, it takes me in a different direction. It offers an intellectual journey into understanding how phenomena have evolved over time. So far, it's been an intriguing learning experience, and I eagerly anticipate my specialised and elective courses in the coming months."
What is the best thing about your programme?
"The highlight of my programme is its diversity. With a cohort from various backgrounds, I get to collaborate with people of different nationalities and diverse working styles, improving my intercultural skills. I actively seek opportunities to work with different individuals in various assignments. I encourage you to try this approach when you are here, and perhaps we can catch up over fika to exchange stories."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"During our preparatory week, we learned the 'Lund University-way'– encompassing learning regimes, teaching methods, and examination formats. One crucial takeaway is that learning is a cognitive process, and experiencing cognitive dissonance is natural. When it happens, I pause and ask, 'How can I see and learn this differently?'. The teaching staff in the Faculty of Social Science at Lund University genuinely care about programme deliverance and seek feedback to enhance our learning experience."
How international is your programme?
"The programme is intentionally international, with students from various parts of the world. I believe the concept of service transcends differences, connecting people from all walks of life. I have interacted with classmates from over 15 nationalities, fostering a global learning environment. My personal mission is to engage with all, if not most, of my classmates before the programme concludes."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies?
"I was intentional about joining student activities while pursuing my Master’s programme. In the August semester of 2023, I joined 180 Degrees Consulting in Lund as the Human Resources Director, overseeing recruitment, coordinating internal communication, and managing events. This experience broadened my knowledge in consultancy work. Most recently, I joined the project teams for 'Agora Day' 2024 (Job fair in Helsingborg) as the Company and Organisation responsible and for Introduction Week 2024 as the Events Manager. Lund University offers numerous opportunities for everyone to get involved in student life, so be sure to seize them!"
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"If service resonates with you and your passionate about making a difference, especially if you've worked in the service industry, this programme is for you. Having spent over five years in the non-profit sector, I find this programme aligns with my aspirations for intellectual growth. Join me in this programme if you're looking to contribute meaningfully to the service sector and foster your passion for service."
Thoughts on being an international student at Lund, spare time and tips for prospective students
What is it like being an international student at Lund University?
"I feel a strong sense of belonging. Although we may speak and understand perspectives differently, we embrace and celebrate our differences here. Lund University attracts international learners from all over the world, creating a diverse and inclusive environment. You could be the next one to experience this enriching community!"
What do you do in your spare time?
"In my free time, I occasionally volunteer at events in Helsingborg. When not volunteering, you will find me on my way to redeeming good deals through apps like Too Good to Go or Karma. These apps allow me to enjoy tasty pastries and bakeries at an affordable price while engaging in sustainable practices. I do hope to go hiking in the spring and summer time and, perhaps, create a list of hiking places that are student-friendly!"
What have been the highlights of your first year in Lund?
"My first year in Lund was marked by serendipitous moments, such as encountering a train disruption on my way to Helsingborg. Struggling with heavy luggage, I approached a fellow traveller for directions and discovered we would be classmates. What initially seemed like an unfortunate situation turned into a stroke of luck, leading to a valuable friendship. I'm grateful for the unexpected turns that made my journey memorable."
Do you have any advice for students that are considering coming to Lund?
"Stay hungry – literally and metaphorically. Ensure you maintain proper nutrition for both the body and mind, especially during the winter. Stay hungry for learning, understanding, and embracing differences. Challenge preconceptions and be open to new understandings and opportunities that may come your way."
