Many of the patients who become seriously ill with COVID-19 suffer from respiratory failure. Therefore, Lund University will train nurses within Region Skåne in advanced care for respiratory failure starting Wednesday.

For healthcare, a big challenge is finding staff with the right skill set to treat COVID-19 patients. Many patients suffer from respiratory failure, and have difficulty oxygenating their blood. It often requires breathing support and intensive care.

For this reason, Lund University and Region Skåne have decided to rapidly start teaching nurses advanced care for patients with respiratory failure.

The first course starts on Wednesday. Courses will last for two weeks and will include three days of theory and practical training on simulators, followed by four days of training under supervision at intensive care units. Each course will train 6-12 nurses, and a new course will start every week for as long as needed.

“It goes without saying that we want to offer our expertise in order to support the healthcare system. I am proud that our teachers are doing this, despite being in what is already a tough situation”, says Irén Tiber, head of the nursing programme at Lund University.

“Our existing collaboration with Lund University and Region Skåne’s hospital administrations makes it easier to work together and find smart solutions to ensure the intensive care staff capacity in Region Skåne. I feel proud and grateful that everyone is coming together to help patients”, says Karin Melander, HR manager at Region Skåne.
