What Shruti says about the Master's in Food Technology and Nutrition

What year did you graduate and what is your current job?

"I graduated in 2019. I am currently working as a PhD researcher in the Department of Food Technology, Engineering and Nutrition at Lund University."

How did you find your job and how long did it take?

"I found the position through some colleagues since I was working in the same department when I was doing my Master’s thesis. I was fairly lucky, and I was given this position before I finished my Master’s education in June 2019."

What is your favourite thing about your job?

"There are many things I like about my job. For instance, my supervisors are very supportive and understanding. Also, the colleagues in the department make working fun since we organize many after works, lunches and workshops to keep up the spirit."

What was especially useful about the programme that you use in your everyday work?

"Since I am working directly in the same field, I believe everything that I studied in the Master’s programme has come in handy during my work as a PhD researcher in some way or another. The programme had really interesting courses such as Product Development, Probiotics, Food Chemistry and so on. Also, the programme offered courses like Dairy Processing and Dairy Technology which gave a great insight on how things work in a real industry, which was very useful for a future career."

What do you miss most from your time at the programme and at Lund?

"I really miss the friends that I made during this programme. It was really nice to meet people from different parts of the world and learn about their culture, food and values. Student life in Lund in itself is an experience. Going to different nations, events, carnivals and corridor parties during my time as a student were some of the most memorable parts."

How international was your programme?

"We had a good bunch of international people in the programme. We had many people from different places in Europe, but also from Asia and the Middle East."

What was the focus of your degree project?

"My degree project was in collaboration with Tetra Pak, which is situated in Lund. Since I am very much interested in food engineering, my degree project focused on the effect of High Shear Mixers on the functionality of non-starch-based hydrocolloids. It was a very good experience to be able to work in industry during your Master’s and create a good network with the industrial partners."

Why do you think prospective students should choose the Food Technology and Nutrition programme?

"You should choose this programme because not only does it provide you with an opportunity to take interesting courses in the field, but it is also an opportunity to be able to work with people from different backgrounds."

Do you have any advice for prospective students coming to Lund?

"My advice would be to not miss out on any opportunities that you come across. Coming to Lund for your Master’s will be a fun experience and you should really make the most out of it."
