Knowledge and Innovation Communities – EIT KICs
Consortia within the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT)
EIT KICs are large-scale EU initiatives that promote long-term collaboration between academia, industry and society. Their purpose is to stimulate innovation and economic growth in Europe in a variety of thematic areas.
Lund University is a member of the following KICs:
- EIT Food
- EIT Climate
These collaborations allow us to actively participate in the development of innovations and solutions to various problems within each thematic area in Europe.
The EIT Office at Lund University
The EIT Office coordinates the University's existing and future KIC initiatives. The Office supports researchers through project management, monitoring and reporting of KIC-related activities.
By participating in European innovation clusters and partnerships, the Office creates collaborations and networks. This strengthens the University's position in innovation and research. The aim is to promote knowledge transfer, societal benefits and sustainable development in the European innovation environment.

EIT Climate has identified three areas where widespread change and reduced emissions can lead to a resilient society and a carbon-neutral economy. These areas are cities, land use and manufacturing.
Climate-KIC@lu is a meeting place for research, learning and collaboration with stakeholders outside academia. Here, activities lead to sustainable innovations that can help solve the climate crisis.

EIT Food is an EU initiative focusing on education, research and innovation in the food sector. The initiative encompasses all challenges in the food chain. It has a mission-driven approach, divided into three broad missions:
- healthier lives through food
- net zero food system
- reducing risks for a fair and resilient food system.

Cultural and creative industries are a priority area for the EU. They include:
- architecture
- fashion
- design
- audiovisual production
- cultural heritage
- publishing
- fine art.
ekip has received EUR 6 million from the European Commission to develop policy recommendations to support innovation in these sectors for the period 2023 to 2026.
The project, which is linked to the Culture and Creative KIC, brings together 17 partners from across Europe. It is coordinated by Lund University.

Facts about KICs and EIT
Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs) bring together different stakeholders across Europe to address global challenges.
KICs are set up by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). This is an independent EU organisation that aims to strengthen Europe's innovation capacity.
The EIT is an integrated part of Horizon Europe, which is the EU's framework programme for research and innovation.
