If you have a complaint about your education

If you feel that the University is not following the rules that apply to your education, you can make a complaint. Here, you can find out how to make a complaint, what your rights and responsibilities are, and where you can turn for support.

As a student, you have the right both to a high-quality education and a good student work environment. If you feel that the University falls short in, for example

  • the way you are treated
  • supervision
  • the quality of the programme
  • processing times

you can make a complaint to the University.

How to make a complaint

If you wish to raise an issue about a course or programme without receiving individual response, you can make a complaint via the anonymous course evaluations that are regularly undertaken.

If, on the other hand, you wish to receive a response, you can read more about how to do that below.

And if you need help or support when making a complaint, you can always contact your student union or the Student Ombudsman – see the contact details on this page.

Start by finding facts about rights and responsibilities, what applies to your particular programme, and whether your faculty has specific information about complaints.

List of Rights

In the University’s List of Rights, you can read about your rights and responsibilities as a student, for example in terms of assessment, course planning and students’ work environment.

Course and programme syllabi

The syllabus includes a description of what applies for your course or programme. You will find the syllabi on the page of each course and programme.

You can also contact your student union or the Student Ombudsman for support or guidance.

Information about complaints specific to your faculty

You can read more about how complaints are handled at your faculty on its external website:

In the first instance, you should try and find a solution with the person concerned. That usually means getting in touch with your lecturer for the course or programme. It might also be someone who has an overarching area of responsibility, such as the course director or programme director.

When necessary, the case may be passed to the director of studies, head of department or equivalent in order to try a reach a solution. If you feel that the issue has not been dealt with to your satisfaction at department level, you can raise the issue with the relevant faculty management via the dean or pro/deputy dean.

See the separate pages about harassment and sexual harassment, and disciplinary offences such as cheating.

Student complaints may later be registered in Lund University’s document registration system. This is the case for harassment or disciplinary offences and in cases where a decision is required. When this happens, the complaint becomes a public document and enters the public domain. Anyone can ask to see a public record. As a public authority, we must disclose these records on request.

If you are not satisfied

If you are not satisfied with the handling of your case by your department or faculty, you can address your complaint to the Vice-Chancellor. You can read more about how to go about contacting the Vice-Chancellor with a complaint and what types of cases are covered in the guidelines below.
