Credit transfer during studies
If you are a student at Lund University and have previously studied at another higher education institution abroad or in Sweden, it is possible that you have already fulfilled the learning outcomes for a certain course/course component.
If you think this is the case, or if you have other knowledge and skills that you think correspond to a certain course/course component, you have the opportunity to apply for credit transfer.
Credit transfer – an opportunity for students
You can apply for credit transfer during your studies if you are a student and enrolled in studies at Lund University. A credit transfer means that you do not have to study something for which you already have corresponding knowledge.
Credit transfers can be made for both formal competence and prior learning. You will find more information below on what this involves and how to proceed.
Bear in mind that a decision in favour of credit transfer may have certain consequences for your studies. For instance, this means that:
- You will not take/do not have the right to take the course/course component for which you have received a credit transfer.
- If you are studying a programme, the credit transfer thus entails a break in your studies which corresponds to the period you would have studied.
- The course result is a credit transfer (T) and the course would therefore not be graded.
- The Swedish Board of Student Finance (CSN) or equivalent in your country (if applicable) is unlikely to grant study finance for courses which have received credit transfers. Visit their website for more information and contact details. Note that this also applies to Swedish study finance from CSN.
For those who want to apply for credit transfer at LTH and the Faculty of Medicine
If your application concerns credit transfer for formal competence or prior learning at the Faculty of Engineering, LTH, please contact the programme planners at LTH. However, if you want to apply for credit transfer at the Faculty of Medicine, you should contact the faculty’s study counsellors.
Credit transfer for formal competence
You can apply for a review to ascertain whether your previous studies from another higher education institution in Sweden or abroad are eligible for credit transfer in your studies at Lund University. A course/course component can either be credited as an optional/elective course or as the equivalent of a course you would otherwise have studied.
If you have questions concerning credit transfer for courses within the study programme or main subject area, contact the study counsellor for the subject. If you want to obtain credit transfers for previous higher education studies as optional courses in the degree, this is handled in conjunction with your application for a certificate.

Credit transfer for prior learning
Prior learning is the actual knowledge you have obtained, whether you have formal documentation or not.
As a student at Lund University, you are afforded the opportunity to have your obtained knowledge and skills assessed and reviewed if you think they may correspond to a course/course component. You do this by applying for a credit transfer for your prior learning. You must be admitted to Lund University and enrolled in studies in order to apply.
