När man berättar. Om performativ maskulinitet i Aurora Ljungstedts fiktion
The masculine narrator. Performative masculinity in Aurora Ljungstedt's fiction
Author
Summary, in English
The thesis examines how the masculinity of the narrator functions in fiction by Aurora Ljungstedt, by analysing the stories ”Nattlogi för ungkarlar” and ”Var det hon?” from Dagdrifverier och drömmerier (1857), as well as ”En gubbes minnen” and ”Harolds skugga” from En jägares historier (1860-61). The analysis uses the intersectional perspectives on gender performativity and hegemonic masculinity articulated by Judith Butler and Raewyn Connell, and refers to historical studies on gender, sexuality and class by Michel Foucault and David Tjeder. The thesis intends to challenge the unmotivated focus on men’s authorships in literary studies of masculinity in Sweden, by demonstrating an analysis of the diversity of masculinities found through the narrative voice in Ljungstedt’s prose.
