How did you find out about this programme?
"After more than 10 fulfilling years teaching Arts at a University in Vietnam, I found myself yearning to explore the world of industrial design. Despite having a stable job, a loving family, and a comfortable life, there was an inner calling I couldn't ignore. When I confided in a Professor at my former Institute of Design School about my desire to understand design fields better, he pointed me towards Lund University's Industrial Design Master's programme. In that instant, deep within, I felt a resounding certainty that I had to pursue on this path, following my passion without any doubt."
Why did you choose this programme? Why in Lund, Sweden?
"I selected Lund University's Master’s Programme in Industrial Design for multiple compelling reasons. The programme perfectly aligns with my expectation, offering an extensive and cutting-edge curriculum that will deepen my knowledge of design trends and practices. I am confident that immersing myself in a community that prioritizes sustainability will not only elevate my educational journey but also contribute significantly to my overall development as a designer.
What drew me to Lund was the vibrant and inclusive academic environment, coupled with Sweden's progressive approach to design and innovation. The multicultural atmosphere in Lund promises a diverse and enriching experience, providing a unique perspective on global design practices that I find particularly exciting."
What is the best thing about your programme?
"I deeply appreciate the autonomy, the nurturing environment, and the unwavering support from the faculty in my programme. This academic journey has been truly transformative, akin to a pivotal moment in my life. It transcends the conventional notion of a school; rather, it feels like a home where every voice is not just heard but genuinely respected. The design exercises and the freedom to explore our ideas bring immense joy, providing us with the opportunity to delve into our thoughts, with each project becoming a substantial learning experience. At the IKDC, the exceptional resources, including numerous workshops and cutting-edge machines for bringing ideas to life, have played a crucial role in my academic journey. Additionally, the curriculum has broadened my perspective, enabling me to explore intriguing realms beyond conventional understanding, exemplified by involvement in the Nasa project. Without a doubt, this programme has provided us with exceptional opportunities that I wouldn't have encountered elsewhere.
One particularly enriching experience was the chance to showcase our projects not only internally but also to a global audience through participation in international design events like the Stockholm Furniture Fair, Salone del Mobile in Milan, and Dutch Design Week in the Netherlands. This exposure not only honed our skills in organising exhibitions but also offered valuable insights into the workings of the design industry. These experiences have not only shaped me as a designer but have also given me a comprehensive understanding of the industry's dynamics, proving to be immensely beneficial for my future endeavours."
What do you think of the teaching style at Lund University?
"What captivates me about Master's in Industrial Design is its distinctive approach of learning by doing. The heart of the programme lies in immersive, real-world design projects, where lectures, field trips, user studies, workshops, and collaborative studio work seamlessly blend. What sets these projects apart is the emphasis on tackling unique challenges identified by students, steering away from well-trodden design paths. This means delving into anything from crafting innovative technology solutions for specialists to envisioning designs meeting future consumer needs, or even developing professional tools for heavy industries. It's this hands-on, problem-solving aspect that truly resonates with my passion for practical, impactful design work."
How international is your programme?
"Joining our programme is like stepping into a vibrant global community. The curriculum incorporates a global perspective, drawing from diverse cultures and industries. Our community is inclusive, comprising students and faculty from various nationalities, fostering cross-cultural interactions. All education happens in English, making it a seamless experience for everyone. What's truly special is that around 80 percent of fellow students hail from different corners of the world, further emphasizing the rich global diversity within our learning community."

Congratulations on winning the European Product Design Award 2023 in the category Home (Household Products)/Garden Appliances and Garden Equipment and Accessory. What was the main inspiration/idea for this project?
"Thank you very much. Ba's Garden represents an innovative system designed for sustainable and effortless urban living, utilizing a soilless method coupled with a self-watering system. The project's inspiration stemmed from a transformative study trip undertaken during the first semester. This experience allowed us to delve deeply into the complex interplay between efficiency and life quality, as well as the impending challenges facing future farming practices, including urbanisation, threats of monoculture, and the global impacts of transportation.
Faced with the urgent need for a shift in human behaviour toward sustainability amid these challenges, I was motivated to find solutions. Ba's Garden, utilizing a grid tray system to foster continuous growth of plant roots, ensuring they receive high-quality nutrition in an efficient manner. The project envisions a future where cities and citizens can adapt by modifying resource usage and embracing self-sufficient gardening solutions within the constraints of space and time."

What does winning this award mean to you and how will it impact your journey moving forward?
"Honestly, winning this award holds profound significance for me. I genuinely believe that, without the mentorship of my supervisor, Olof Kolte, this achievement wouldn't have been possible. His unwavering commitment to fostering a sustainable project environment has created a space where students, including myself, can explore and develop impactful ideas for the field. Looking ahead, this award serves as a validation of the innovative approach we've taken. It not only boosts my confidence but also enhances visibility in sustainable design efforts. I am eager to leverage this accomplishment to forge connections, collaborate with like-minded professionals, and continue making strides in the realm of sustainable design."
What was the biggest challenge or best moment during this design process?
"In specific industries, I observe a well-structured design process with clearly defined roles and distinct areas of expertise. For me, a robust design philosophy serves as a pivotal guide. However, strong technical skills are equally essential. The integration of sketching and 3D becomes crucial, facilitating visualisation and form shaping while addressing technical constraints and usability potential simultaneously. The best moment in this design process occurred when I realized that what may seem impossible becomes achievable once pursued."
