Swedish-taught courses and programmes

Lund University offers 241 degree programmes and over 1450 stand-alone courses, most of which have Swedish as the language of instruction.

As with all courses and programmes at Lund University, applicants must fulfil the general admission requirements of the University as well as the specific admission requirements of the particular course or programme, to be eligible for studies.

Please note that even if you meet all requirements, admission to our programmes is highly competitive and there is no guarantee that you will be offered a place on the programme to which you apply.

General requirements for studies taught in Swedish

Bachelor's level studies taught in Swedish:

• have successfully completed upper secondary education (post-16) that gives access to universities in the student’s home country (there may be some other country-specific requirements)
• be able to demonstrate proficiency in English (see below for information)
• be able to demonstrate proficiency in Swedish (see below for information)

Master's level studies taught in Swedish:

• have been awarded a Bachelor's degree from an internationally recognised university (there may be some other country-specific requirements).

Specific admission requirements

Each programme or course has specific admission requirements related to the subject being studied. At Bachelor's level, this may include a required subject level at secondary school. At the Master's level, most (but not all) programmes or courses require that you have completed an undergraduate degree in the same or related subject as the programme/course to which you will apply.

Swedish language proficiency

Written and oral skills in the Swedish language are a general admission requirement. The following Swedish language proficiency levels/tests are accepted:

• Svenska 3 or Svenska som andraspråk 3 at a Swedish upper secondary school or at Komvux (Komvux provides adult education for local municipalities across Sweden). 
• Tisus Swedish proficiency test. (The Tisus test is offered in several Swedish cities and is given twice a year at Lund University. You can do the Tisus test in 60 different locations around the world, on all continents. Passing the Tisus test is equivalent to passing Svenska 3).

English language proficiency

Written and oral skills in the English language are a general admission requirement. Most programmes and courses taught in Swedish at Lund University require English language proficiency level English 6 (advanced level), which is the equivalent of completed English studies at upper secondary school level in Sweden and an IELTS overall score 6.5 (no section less than 5.5) or TOEFL internet overall score of 90 (written test 20). A few programmes and courses have a higher English language proficiency requirement. Check the programme or course description that you are interested in to see the specific English language requirement. Applying for programmes and courses taught in Swedish

There are two main application periods for Swedish-taught education:

• Studies commencing in autumn (September): 15 March–15 April. Admission results are usually announced in mid-July.
• Studies commencing in spring (January): 15 September–15 October. Admission results are usually announced in December.

If you plan to apply for Swedish-taught studies during the above application periods, you generally need to either have a Swedish residence permit already (i.e. currently be living in Sweden) or have EU/EEA citizenship, as there is not usually enough time between admission results and the start of the semester for the Swedish Migration Board to process a residence permit.

Learning the Swedish language

Lund University offers Study Abroad Swedish language programmes for those who wish to come to Sweden for two semesters to study the language. You are welcome to apply for our intense two-semester programme covering levels 1–8. Completion of level 8 (including a pass on the final test which is equivalent to the TISUS test) will enable you to apply for studies taught in Swedish at a Swedish Higher Education Institution.
