What Michael says about the Master's in Finance
Introducing Michael
Hi! My name is Michael and I'm the student ambassador for the Master's programme in Finance. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.
About the programme and the teaching style
Why did you choose Lund University?
"Sweden was more convenient for me to study finance because of its strong financial market. I based my research on programme rankings and career services, both of which were very good at Lund University. Also, Lund's location was better for me than other cities in Sweden, as it's very close to Copenhagen so you can go whenever you want and it's also warmer."
What do you think of your programme so far? Does it meet your expectations?
"Actually, my programme has exceeded my expectations! It is very quantitative and requires a good background in Mathematics, Statistics and Python."
What is the best thing about your programme?
"The best thing in my programme is that it's very well structured, meaning that each study period actually depends on the one before it. This way, students know why they are studying this specific course and how it would benefit them in the next study period."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"The teaching style in Sweden is very different from what I used to. Overall, they depend more on empirical methods and approaches rather than just theory."
How international is your programme?
"The majority of the students in the programme are from Europe and China. We also have students from the USA, Australia, Thailand, Taiwan and Vietnam."
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"Students who are passionate about empirical methods in Finance should choose this programme. It provides you with the knowledge you need without being too hard for you to comprehend."
What are the potential benefits or differences in doing a one-year Master’s programme?
"This was actually one of the reasons I chose Lund! Having an MSc in Finance for one year is really a challenge. It's more intense and needs students to always keep up with lectures, assignments and labs. However, it's a great benefit to finish the MSc in Finance from a reputable University as Lund, and start looking for jobs faster than usual."
Thoughts on being an international student at Lund and spare time
What is it like being an international student at Lund University?
"Being an international student at Lund isn't hard at all. You feel at home because you find more international students than usual. They share the same experiences and feelings as you so you would never be stuck on something – there's definitely someone who can give you advice. You always have something to do. If you're not studying, you could go hiking, have fun, play sports, go to parties or even attend festivals (hint: A lot of festivals come around throughout the year here in Sweden)."
What do you do in your spare time?
"Since I came here, I really enjoyed hiking even though I haven't gone hiking before back home. I work out and sometimes I visit other Swedish cities. This Christmas break, I'm planning to travel outside of Sweden as well. You don't want to miss going around all of Europe whenever you feel like it."
