What Nushaba says about the Master's in International Strategic Management
Introducing Nushaba
Hi! My name is Nushaba and I'm the student ambassador for the Master's programme in International Strategic Management. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.
About the programme and the teaching style
Why did you choose Lund University?
"I chose Lund University primarily because of its International Strategic Management programme, which aligns perfectly with my academic and professional background. Having studied Finance and worked in business consulting, I've always been deeply committed to addressing environmental and social challenges. Lund’s reputation for excellence in sustainability, combined with the programme’s strong emphasis on both theoretical foundations and practical applications in strategy, made it the ideal choice for me to advance my expertise in this field."
What do you think of your programme so far? Does it meet your expectations?
"The programme is undoubtedly challenging due to the intensity of the courses and the workload, but this challenge has been incredibly rewarding. Seeing the tangible results of my hard work not only meets my expectations but also inspires me to push further and continue growing both academically and personally."
What is the best thing about your programme?
"The best aspect of my programme is its seamless integration of practical assignments into the coursework. Working with real companies on their business strategies not only enhances our skills by applying theoretical knowledge but also provides valuable insights into the challenges faced by Swedish companies while expanding our professional network. Additionally, I greatly appreciate the visiting lecturers from various industries and sectors, who share their inspiring career experiences and enrich our learning journey."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"The teaching style in Sweden is quite different from my previous academic experiences in Azerbaijan and Italy. In my earlier studies, we typically had 5-6 subjects running concurrently over an entire semester, with predefined exam months in January and June. At Lund, the structure is much more dynamic, with one course in the first two months and then three courses running simultaneously in the next two months, each with unique exam dates and deadlines. Initially, the pace felt overwhelming especially, completing all readings and assignments within a month for each course. However, this challenge has made the learning experience both engaging and rewarding. I also appreciate the independence instructors have in organising lectures, workshops, and assignments, which brings creative and interactive activities into the classroom."
How international is your programme?
"Our programme is highly international, with a diverse cohort representing over 15 nationalities. This diversity brings different and valuable perspectives, ideas, and experiences to the classroom, enriching discussions."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies?
"Yes, I’ve gained practical experience across several courses in the programme. For example, in our Strategic Management course, we worked as external consultants for a Swedish company, meeting with representatives to analyse challenges and provide strategic recommendations. Additionally, simulations have been an integral part of our learning, where we act as company managers, make decisions, and analyse their impact on financial and strategic outcomes. These hands-on experiences have significantly enhanced my understanding and application of theoretical concepts."
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"This programme offers a wealth of opportunities for students passionate about strategy and sustainability. It provides a comprehensive understanding of these fields through diverse core and elective subjects. Additionally, the programme stands out for its unique offerings, such as the option to pursue a double degree at Deakin University or complete a minor in Sustainability. These opportunities, combined with a strong emphasis on practical application and global perspectives, make it an excellent choice for prospective students."
What are the potential benefits or differences in doing a one-year Master’s programme?
"The main reason I chose a one-year programme was to enhance my knowledge efficiently, as I had already gained 2.5 years of work experience. I wanted to further my education without taking too much time away from my career. One of the key differences with a two-year programme is the intensity – a one-year Master's is highly condensed, requiring a fast-paced, action-oriented approach. While challenging, it allows for a more focused and accelerated learning experience, helping me quickly apply new skills and continue progressing in my career."
Thoughts on being an international student at Lund, spare time and tips for prospective students
What is it like being an international student at Lund University?
"Being an international student at Lund University is a truly rewarding experience. The campus and the city are designed with students in mind, creating a student-centric environment where everything is easily accessible. As an international student, I’ve found it easy to integrate, as everyone is welcoming and eager to help, and most people speak English fluently. This makes adapting to life here smooth and enjoyable, while also allowing me to focus on my studies and connect with people from all over the world."
What do you do in your spare time?
"In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with friends from my programme, grabbing fika, and attending Nation parties or traditional Swedish sittnings. These activities allow me to unwind, socialise, and experience the local culture while connecting with fellow students."
Do you have any advice for students that are considering coming to Lund?
"My advice would be to come prepared to unlearn, learn, and apply new knowledge and skills. The programme and environment will challenge you in many ways, so stay open-minded and adaptable. Also, mentally prepare yourself for the darker and colder months – the Swedish winter can be tough, but it's part of the experience, and you'll find ways to make the most of it!"
