What Vala says about the Master's of Fine Arts in Artistic Research
Vala Foltyn from Poland
How did you find out about Lund University and this Master’s programme?
“I have been based in Copenhagen since 2019 and was already in contact with the Malmö Art Academy. One of the curators I worked with recommended me to check out this new Master’s programme in Malmö. Now I am studying in my first year.”
What made you feel like this programme was the right one?
“The Master’s programme is very tailored for artists who already have a specific interest in artistic research and are aspiring for a doctoral position. I really liked how the programme was dedicated to support and meet the individual needs of each artist and their projects. My specialisation is within queer arts and magic, a field that is relatively unexplored, so my professors and I are currently looking for the best ways for me to expand my knowledge in this area."
What do you think is the best thing about your programme?
“I appreciate that we are a small group of students since this gives you a lot of quality time with your peers and professors. This exchange of thoughts and sharing experiences is important since all of us are coming from different research backgrounds.”
What is your long-term career goal?
“I am definitely planning to apply for a PhD after this Master’s and to stay in either Denmark or Sweden. This is my second Master’s and I must say that I am really impressed by the Swedish education system for recognising my previous programme in Anthropology of Dance as an artistic education. In the future, I would love to contribute with further knowledge about queer arts and performance as well as pursue an academic career as a queer person”
Why do you think prospective students should choose this programme?
“The programme is very specific and progressive since it actually corresponds to current trends in contemporary art. This education goes beyond art production – teaching you how to critically reflect on the art that you produce by placing it in a wider societal, social and political context. At the same time, it is also about doing actual practical work. The teaching approach is very individually adapted and encourages the students to grow and prepare for a future PhD.”
How do you like Sweden? Did you feel welcome here?
“Yes, I think Sweden is a place where people show an understanding of where you come from and people here are quite easy to talk to. I am thinking of learning Swedish in the future.”
What do you think about the city of Malmö?
“The chances to explore and attend student activities have been limited due to the pandemic, but I really like what I have seen so far. Before the Covid-19 restrictions were introduced, I had access to a shared studio provided by the Art Academy that is situated close to Triangeln station. It is a very nice part of town with a lot of great places to go out and eat or just hang out.”
