What Lillian says about the Master's in Biology, Conservation Biology
Introducing Lillian
Hi! My name is Lillian and I'm the student ambassador for the Master's programme in Biology, Conservation Biology. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.
About the programme and the teaching style
Why did you choose Lund University?
"I found Lund’s Conservation Biology programme by chance, and after further research, I found it was a really unique course that allowed me to focus on my passions. I liked the idea of studying in a new country and being surrounded by students from all over the world. Lund is also very prestigious within the field of biology, and I knew getting a degree here would help me continue on my career pathway."
What do you think of your programme so far? Does it meet your expectations?
"This programme has exceeded my expectations in the best of ways. I was really surprised by the amount of hands-on experience we got even in the first few courses. The courses are very versatile, with lectures, seminars, and practical or theoretical exercises, and they give you the chance to apply your knowledge in real-world contexts through field and lab work."
What is the best thing about your programme?
"The thing I like most about the programme is how well-rounded it is. There are a variety of different courses to choose from and within each course, you get taught by multiple professors who specialise in different fields. There is also the opportunity to do applied work for credits which is a great way to get some hands-on experience."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"The teaching style here is very different from what I am used to in Canada. Instead of five courses at a time, we focus intensely on one course here, allowing you to really dive deep into the material. We engage in a lot more collaborative work with classmates, and the professors have an open-door policy that makes connecting with them extremely easy."
How international is your programme?
"My programme is very international. In one of my courses last year, we had students from 13 different nationalities. It has been a great opportunity being able to meet people from all over the world and share knowledge from our different backgrounds."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies?
"I have had many opportunities to gain practical experience in this programme. The courses typically include excursions and/or fieldwork, helping me apply what I learn in the classroom in the real world. I am currently working on my thesis research which allows me to work on my own project involving both lab and field work."
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"Prospective students should choose this programme for its incredible teaching staff and courses. There is also so much support from teachers and peers which can help you excel. The programme allows you to take a wide array of courses that you can tailor to your own passions and needs. This degree is great for both students who would like to work or pursue a PhD after completion."
Thoughts on being an international student at Lund, spare time and tips for prospective students
What is it like being an international student at Lund University?
"Being an international student at Lund University has been a real eye-opener for me and an overall amazing experience. I have made friends from all over the world and have been able to learn so much about so many different cultures."
What do you do in your spare time?
"In my free time, I love getting out and exploring all that Skåne, the region where Lund is located, has to offer. On weekends, I love going on hikes and exploring nearby nature preserves or taking the train and exploring a new town."
What have been the highlights of your first year in Lund?
"The main highlights from my first year were the overnight field excursions we had in the courses. I found this was where I could apply what I had learned in the classroom while also having the opportunity to get to know my classmates well."
Do you have any advice for students that are considering coming to Lund?
"One piece of advice I have for students considering coming to Lund would be to learn Swedish through the free SFI courses. Although it isn’t necessary, it will allow you to be more immersed in the overall community."
