What Nancy says about the Bachelor's in Mathematics
Introducing Nancy
Hi! My name is Nancy and I'm the student ambassador for the Bachelor's programme in Mathematics. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.
About the programme and the teaching style
Why did you choose Lund University?
"I chose Lund University because it is close to my home in Malmö, which was an important factor for me. Additionally, Lund offers a mathematics programme in English – exactly what I was looking for. It's also a well-known and reputable university, so I felt confident that I would have a great student experience and a good quality education here."
What do you think of your programme so far? Does it meet your expectations?
"So far, I’m enjoying my programme very much. The theoretical content is well-taught, and the assignments have been incredibly helpful for deepening my understanding. This mathematics programme offers a wide range of opportunities to explore different areas, whether in pure mathematics, mathematical statistics, or numerical analysis. It absolutely exceeded my expectations."
What is the best thing about your programme?
"The best thing about my programme is the flexibility and freedom to tailor my studies to my interests. For example, I’m interested in machine learning, so I’m currently taking courses in numerical analysis and plan to explore some computer science courses later on. Also, collaborating with students from diverse backgrounds has been really interesting and enriching."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"The teaching style in Sweden is very student-centred and encourages open dialogue between students and professors. I appreciate how professors make efforts to treat us as equals and are always open to feedback and new ideas."
How international is your programme?
"My programme is definitely international. I study with people from all over the world. This brings a variety of perspectives and cultural viewpoints into our discussions."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies?
"Yes, I have gained practical experience through project work as part of the programme. I am starting to learn more about practical applications through courses in numerical analysis, and I’m looking forward to gaining more valuable and exciting experiences during my studies."
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"If you’re a "cool nerd" who loves maths, this programme is perfect for you (if you also get a happy feeling when looking at squares, we should be friends!). This programme offers a deep understanding of various areas of mathematics and lots of room to explore your specific interests, whether in pure maths, statistics, or interdisciplinary fields like computer science. After all, in a world full of problems, math is the solution!"
Thoughts on being an international student at Lund, spare time and tips for prospective students
What is it like being an international student at Lund University?
"It is a cool experience. The university and city are very cozy and welcoming, and many communities provide countless events and activities where we explore student life at LU and what it’s like to live in Sweden/Lund."
What do you do in your spare time?
"In my spare time, I enjoy climbing, walking, and exploring the beautiful nature around me. The area in Lund has many parks and empty fields, making it really enjoyable to be outside. I also like watching reels on Instagram and sharing the funniest (or weirdest) ones with my friends."
What have been the highlights of your first year in Lund?
"My first year in Lund has been both stressful and rewarding, especially as I successfully completed my courses. One of the highlights has been getting to know new friends and studying in the supportive and free environment at LU."
Do you have any advice for students that are considering coming to Lund?
"My advice would be to take advantage of the many opportunities available both inside and outside the classroom. It’s also important to be open-minded and ready to engage with people from different backgrounds."
