What Sasiya says about the Master's in Human Ecology - Culture, Power and Sustainability
Introducing Sasiya
Hi! My name is Sasiya and I'm the student ambassador for the Master's programme in Human Ecology, Culture, Power and Sustainability. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.
About the programme and the teaching style
Why did you choose Lund University?
"Lund University is one of the best universities that popped up to mind when I was deciding where to pursue my Master’s degree. However, the most important reason that brought me here is the politeness and care I received from the start of my application process until today. Lund University is very friendly and takes great care of every student."
What do you think of your programme so far? Does it meet your expectations?
"My programme is Human Ecology, and through it, I have learned many things about human-to-human and human-to-nature relationships, which is very interesting and has given me many perspectives. It meets my expectations."
What is the best thing about your programme?
"The structure of the programme is one of its best things. I’ve learned from the introduction of knowledge to methods of conducting research in Human Ecology. Also, I have had several opportunities to go on field trips, which have provided me with more experience and allowed me to apply everything I’ve learned in class to real-life work."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"It’s quite new for me, honestly. I’m used to studying through lectures rather than seminars or assignments. But here, I participate in more seminars and assignments than lectures, which is great. It allows me to learn more independently, and I can do whatever I want to do without any limitation. It also gives me opportunities to work with people from many countries."
How international is your programme?
"My programme is very international. Even though there are only three Asians, no more than two people come from the same country. Every time I do group work, everyone in the group comes from a different country."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies?
"Yes, as I mentioned before, I’ve had two field trips – one lasting three days and the other seven days."
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"If you want to know everything related to human-to-human and human-to-nature relationships, not just the current situation but also the roots of these dynamics, this programme is the answer. All the topics focus on ways to make the world more sustainable, so it is an interesting programme for sure!"
Thoughts on being an international student at Lund, spare time and tips for prospective students
What is it like being an international student at Lund University?
"It is so good! I have to say that for real. I did my Bachelor’s degree outside my country too, so I can say that Lund University is next level. They take excellent care of me and help with everything. Even in winter, for example, they provide mental health sessions to help students with depression. In my opinion, Lund University makes students – both international and local – the top priority."
What do you do in your spare time?
"I usually walk around Lund city and also visit Malmö, Ystad, Helsingborg, and Copenhagen since they’re not far from here."
What have been the highlights of your first year in Lund?
"Christmas! But honestly, everything. I’m so excited to enjoy everything that happens in Lund. Lund is a very comfy city, and it makes me feel relaxed all the time."
Do you have any advice for students that are considering coming to Lund?
"Lund is a small city but very peaceful. You can find everything necessary for daily life here, and the cost of living is not expensive, so you don’t have to worry about it. Also, most people here can speak English."
