What Sualihu says about the Master's in Service Management, Sustainable Service Management
Introducing Sualihu
Hi! My name is Sualihu and I'm the student ambassador for the Master's programme in Service Management, Sustainable Service Management. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.
Why did you choose Lund University?
"I chose Lund University for several reasons. Firstly, it offers the most comprehensive multidisciplinary programmes for international students, integrates cutting-edge research practices, and offers the most detailed course content. The labour market is always yearning for graduates of Lund. Additionally, the university’s environment, fairness, and equality attracted me. I chose Lund University because of its interest in promoting practical knowledge acquisition, research development, and essential career skills."
What are your first impressions of your programme? Does it meet your expectations?
"I have the impression that the programme will offer me a unique opportunity to seek management expertise at an advanced level with a strong emphasis on research. I believe that the programme offers hands-on practical experience in the field of service management and combines in-depth knowledge of the service sectors with an understanding of the specific organisational and management needs of service activities."
What have been the highlights of your first months in Lund?
"It is very welcoming here and I have received support from ambassadors and student mentors during my first month. I could speak with colleagues and students I met on my way to orientations and other student activities. I have had a unique experience living abroad during my first month at Lund University."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"The teaching methods used here differ from my home country. Teachers allow students to conduct research to develop an intellectual understanding of the content and approach the subject matter practically. They leave you to leverage your skills to solve real-world problems. The teaching and learning style will challenge you. Also, you will often be asked to present references that demonstrate the outcome of what you have learned so far."
How international is your programme?
"It is truly an international classroom setting, made up of individuals from around the world. There are nine different nationalities represented in my programme and, because of this, we share a variety of unique ideas during workshops and seminars. The university also organises interactive student fairs that help us connect with other students and industries for employment opportunities. The programme is fully international with a focus on innovation and sustainability to achieve global goals."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies?
"During my studies, I have gained significant practical experience through various activities. I’ve participated in field trips, attended seminars and conferences, engaged in project work, and taken advantage of networking opportunities. My classroom lectures and discussions have also played a vital role. Additionally, I have acquired hands-on research experience from professors specialising in service management and sustainability. They have shown me how service logic can help service workers create and co-create value within organisations committed to holistic sustainability."
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"This programme is interdisciplinary and holistic that transfers abstract and theoretical knowledge into real-world knowledge. It engages students in critical and reflexive thinking to solve real-life problems with transparency platforms and knowledgeable professors to guide students in acquiring global social science research experience. The programme provides practical knowledge and experience in global sustainability service management, along with the managerial skills and expertise needed to advocate for sustainable development in the service sectors of the economy."
What is it like being an international student at Lund University?
"Lund University fosters an international student environment that embraces diverse backgrounds and nationalities within the classroom. The university encourages dialogues through workshops and seminars that provide practical examples from various perspectives. This creates a highly interactive international atmosphere where students can connect and exchange ideas. Additionally, Lund University organises fairs where students can network with industries and explore career opportunities, enhancing employability. The programme is fully international, focusing on innovation, environmental awareness, and sustainability, all aimed at achieving universal sustainable development goals."
What do you do in your spare time?
"In my spare time, I enjoy reading books and articles and learning from YouTube and other online platforms for professional development. The library feels like my second home – if I’m not at my primary residence, you can usually find me there. I also include sports in my routine to take breaks from studying or assignments. When I feel tired or stressed from long periods of learning and reading, I unwind by watching movies."
What have been the highlights of your first year in Lund?
"My journey at Lund University has been both cheerful and fulfilling. I have had the opportunity to learn from professors who are experts in their own fields, which has helped me cultivate a global perspective and approach issues with a holistic mindset while avoiding narrow judgments. Now, I can analyse societal issues from an informed lens. Lund University feels like a nurturing parent, guiding students to adapt and thrive in any society."
Do you have any advice for students who are considering coming to Lund?
"My advice for prospective students is that Lund University will welcome you as warmly as family. Your personal growth and overall development are central to the values of Lund University. Don’t worry; you’re joining a university committed to social awareness, equality, equity, and social cohesion, all aimed at addressing and solving global issues through research and community engagement."
