What Tallha says about the Master's in Machine Learning, Systems and Control
Introducing Tallha
Hi! My name is Tallha and I'm the student ambassador for the Master's programme in Machine Learning, Systems and Control. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.
Why did you choose Lund University?
"I chose Lund primarily because of the programme that is offered here. Since I was looking for a degree that was a mix between Control Systems and Computer Sciences, I found exactly that in the Machine Learning, Systems and Control programme offered at Lund University."
What are your first impressions of your programme? Does it meet your expectations?
"My first impressions were that it was easier than I had thought and that it wasn't as well structured as I would want it to be. Almost 2 months and one exam session later, I can say that it is neither! The programme is well structured and is clearly moving towards an aim and each assignment, class activity and lab task is aimed at preparing us for the real world. So, I guess I can say that it lives up to my expectations and even exceeds some for now."
What have been the highlights of your first months in Lund?
"Very pleasant weather, unexpected rains, thrift shopping and lots of very energetic and motivated people have been the highlights. I've been busy trying to find my comfort zone and setting up my workspace. Since this is the first time I had to live away from home and cook my own food, cooking has been a major highlight."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"I expected it to be more centred around the instructor, but it’s not. The teaching style in Sweden is centred around the course content which is a little different from what I am used to. It is very good in its own way since it encourages students to self-learn a lot of things, which is how you learn most."
How international is your programme?
"Of the approximately 15 students, we have students from 5 continents and only one Swedish student, so I guess I can say that it is very international."
What are you most looking forward to in your programme?
"I am looking forward to doing as many interesting projects as I can during this time. I see myself coming out of this programme with experience both in research and development since that is why I am doing a Master’s in the first place. I also look forward to working at some of the most competitive and highly reputable organisations in Europe, within and outside of Sweden."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies?
"I got to work as a computer science intern at the robot lab in my second semester and then got an opportunity to work at Scania over the summer. Both practical experiences allowed me to apply the skills I learned in class and gave me a better insight into the industry."
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"This programme is perfect for people transitioning to Machine Learning or Automatic Control or specializing in these fields. The curriculum is well-structured to take you from the ground up, and the University provides you with ample opportunity to stretch your limits."
What is it like being an international student at Lund University?
"Amazing honestly, to the point that I can say that Lund University and the city of Lund might end up spoiling you. The University is built around student life and the teachers and administrative machinery are constantly doing everything to make the experience even better. From housing academia and co-curricular, you will find it a haven for international students."
What do you do in your spare time?
"I have been doing different things at different times. These included following a fitness routine, exploring the Skåne region and hanging out with friends."
What have been the highlights of your first year in Lund?
"It is hard to pick one, but I'd say the cherry and apple blossoms in spring are out of this world."
Do you have any advice for students that are considering coming to Lund?
"I'd suggest students take a good look at the courses offered in this programme and compare them with similar courses offered at other Swedish universities. Weigh the "student city" factor as well and then, make your decision."
