What Kevin says about the Master's in Production and Materials Engineering
Kevin from Peru
What year did you graduate?
"I graduated in 2022."
What is your current job and where is it located?
"I work as a Process Engineer at Sandvik Coromant USA in their Westminster, South Carolina manufacturing plant."
How did you find your job and how long did it take?
"I found it by checking the company’s website. The process took around three months from the moment I applied to my first day at work."
Favourite thing about your job?
"I like that I’m able to use the knowledge obtained in the Master's and my previous work experience."
How are you changing the industry or the world (in a large or small way)?
"I like that the company has a good organisation towards manufacturing sustainably. Currently, I’m part of the 'Green Team' of our site and we meet every month to discuss ideas that will help us become a better green factory. For example, improving our recycling activities, finding ways to reuse materials or prevent unnecessary use of others."
What was especially useful about the programme that you use in your everyday work?
"Although not every day, things I use a lot from the Master's are lean manufacturing tools like 5S, Andan and Gemba. Also, the ability to perform root cause analysis for production problems is important."
What do you miss most from your time at Lund University/The Faculty of Engineering (LTH)? What were the highlights of your time at Lund?
"I’d say riding my bike and fika! And of course, I also miss some of the friends I met during my time there. The highlight would be my trip to the Swedish Lapland to try to see the Northern lights. Even though it was very cloudy, I caught a glimpse of it so that was amazing!"
How international was your programme?
"I’d say it was a very international environment! Most of the people in my programme were from different countries. Additionally, you could meet people in other events like participating in nations, mentor groups and student sections."
What was the focus of your thesis?
"It was focused on tool wear analysis during the machining of Compacted Graphite Iron. The analysis was also focused on using Minimum quantity lubricant, which is a sustainable approach to machining instead of traditional flood cooling."
Why do you think prospective students should choose this programme?
"I think this Master's is good for someone interested in the metal cutting area, either to work in a production facility with CNC machines or for someone interested in researching the metal cutting field. Lund has very knowledgeable faculty members with good industry connections."
Do you have any advice for prospective students coming to Lund?
"I’d say two things. First, is to have a plan for what you want to do after your studies so that you get all the skills you need for it during the two years. For example, learning Swedish is very helpful if you’re planning to stay in Sweden after the Master's. The second thing is to contact the professors researching the areas you’re interested in. This could allow you to participate in projects you like and find job opportunities after your studies."
