What Filipa says about the Master's in Biomedicine
Introducing Filipa
Hi! My name is Filipa and I'm the student ambassador for the Master's programme in Biomedicine. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.
Why did you choose Lund University?
"I chose Lund University because, among the universities in Sweden that offered the Master’s programme that I wanted, it was the one I was most interested in. Furthermore, it is a top-ranked university, with a large investment in research and very focused on its international students."
What are your first impressions of your programme? Does it meet your expectations?
"My programme is very focused on teaching us how to be researchers and gives us the foundation and tools to become one. So far, the course I have had has been quite introductory and comprehensive, and the second course is more targeted and structured, giving us the possibility of gaining experience in the laboratory. It's quite different from my previous education, but I'm enjoying it so far, and I’m quite excited to see what the next steps will be like."
What have been the highlights of your first months in Lund?
"The highlights of my first months in Lund have undoubtedly been the opportunities to explore the nature that surrounds the city, the people that I’ve met so far, and all the fun activities we’ve been doing together. Furthermore, the ease with which you can travel to other places and the beauty of the country makes everything better."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"Coming from an education where most classes are taught by teachers, and where there is not much space for critical thinking, education in Sweden was, without a doubt, a shock. One of the many advantages of this teaching style is the group work and problem-based learning classes which gives us space to discuss different ideas and learn to work as a team."
How international is your programme?
"In total, there are 30 people in my programme and one half consists of international students while the other half is Swedish students."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies?
"I had the opportunity to conduct a voluntary internship at the Stem Cell Centre in BMC, in a group that studies cancer and neurodevelopment. It is also possible to gain some experience through the research summer school, where you can choose a lab of your preference and conduct a summer research project there."
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"The international Master’s degree in Biomedicine is a great way to become a great scientist. The different courses are meant to prepare you for a future in either academia or industry. The professors are active researchers and experts in their field, and the programme presents different opportunities to expand your skills and network."
What is it like being an international student at Lund University?
"Being an international student at Lund is a super fun experience, as the academic life is built for both locals and internationals. You get to meet a lot of other international students and be part of both local and worldwide experiences and traditions. The university is highly focused on making international students feel at home and it is easy to communicate in English wherever you go."
What do you do in your spare time?
"In my spare time, I usually go out with my friends to try different cafes and bakeries, and Lund is great with so many different options to choose from. I also love to go on hikes, and there are some good places around Skåne to do so. Reading and writing are also among my favourite hobbies."
What have been the highlights of your first year in Lund?
"The highlight has definitely been my group of friends and the amazing activities we have done together. From hiking, swimming, baking, exploring the surroundings and participating in Swedish traditions, we’ve done it all. Travelling and discovering new places has also been incredible."
Do you have any advice for students that are considering coming to Lund?
"Enjoy academic life and get involved with Swedish culture! It is amazing to be an international here, but it is also great to have the full experience. Also, come prepared for the weather with good winter clothes – layer up like an onion! Other than that, just prepare to meet amazing people and have an amazing experience!"
