Summary, in English
Rename or Reproduce – A Descriptive Study of the Translation of the Professional Titles and the Traditional Dalecarlian Names with a Referential Meaning in Jerusalem by Selma Lagerlöf
This study investigates the translation of professional titles and the traditional names from the region of Dalecarlia, proper names that often contains referential meanings. It is a descriptive study that examines the procedure and the result of the translation to compare the results of the two included groups. The used method consists of designating variables to each word and that intents to designate the alteration or maintenance of significance, the translation technique used in the translation and if there is a use of footnotes. In the case of the analysis of the translation of the proper names, the variables in the table expresses if the name has been translated, if there is a use of footnotes and the subcategorization of the epithet. The result shows that the majority of the professional titles with a particular Swedish meaning obtains a generalized meaning or adapted to the values of the target culture. The titles that don’t include a specific Swedish meaning tends to maintain their original meaning. The result of the study shows that the proper names with epithets containing referential meanings are translated, and those that are considered to not contain referential meaning maintain their original form. Generally, if the name is not translated, the footnotes provides information for the reader. The result shows that not all the information about the historical and cultural context in which the traditional names are formed are communicated to the Spanish reader. In the comparison between the translation of the names and the working titles, it can be noted that even though the epithets often are considered to contain referential meaning, they can be left in their original form, hence the conclusion that they are considered to be names rather than words, and, are translated accordingly.
