Cultural and public centres
On this page, you will find a selection of the University's public activities. These include music, museums, discovery centres and botanical gardens.
Botanical Garden
The Botanical Garden cultivates thousands of plant species on eight hectares of land in central Lund. The Garden operates a wide variety of activities in the areas of botany, horticulture, plant preservation and environmental awareness, partly for the University’s teaching and research, but also for preschools, schools, the public and public authorities.
The garden attracts around 700,000 visitors a year.
Historical Museum
With the amazing finds from the richest Iron Age settlement in the Nordic countries – Uppåkra – and much more, the Historical Museum at Lund University is the largest museum of archaeological finds, coins, and medieval church art in southern Sweden. The museum dates back to the 18th century.
Skissernas Museum – Museum of Artistic Process and Public Art
At Skissernas Museum – Museum of Artistic Process and Public Art – you will find exhibitions of sketches, preparatory studies and models for public art. The aim is to show the creative process, the 'birth' of the work of art, as the museum's founder Ragnar Josephson once put it. Today, the museum focuses more and more on highlighting the different aspects of public art and its development.
Odeum – Music Centre
Odeum’s roots date back to 1745 when Lund University Academic Orchestra (Akademiska Kapellet) was founded. Today, it is Lund University’s centre for student-based music-making, concerts, lectures and education. Within Odeum there are three student-based ensembles: the Lund University Academic Orchestra, the Lund Academic Choir and the Palaestra Vocal Ensemble.
Inter Arts Center (IAC)
Inter Arts Center (IAC) is a research infrastructure for artistic research and research in music education, cross-disciplinary art and research, and cooperation with both academic and artistic partners. It is part of the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts at Lund University and works in close dialogue with the three academies Malmö Art Academy, Malmö Academy of Music and Malmö Theatre Academy. The center has sound, video and artists' studios, as well as venues for performances, concerts, installations, screenings, talks and seminars.
Vattenhallen Science Centre
Vattenhallen is for anyone who wants to learn about science and technology in an interactive and fun way. In the exhibition hall, you will find exciting experiments, challenges and displays. For example, you can interact with robots, learn about the evolution of the Earth, or try your hand at tickling electrons. The digestive system exhibition takes you on an interactive journey through the body. Younger children can explore the senses and discover how the brain works in the Children's Room.
Vattenhallen is open at weekends and during school holidays, when you can enjoy one of the popular shows. You can also contact Vattenhallen about organising events, lectures or children's parties.
Planetarium
The Faculty of Science planetarium first opened in 1978 in Stadsparken in Lund. The planetarium was reopened in the spring of 2010 at Vattenhallen Science Center. In the summer of 2012, new digital equipment was installed that gives the visitor a sense of flying out into the Universe and visiting planets and galaxies.
