What Katharina says about the Master's in Industrial Design
Katharina from Germany
What is your background?
"I am from a small town in the middle of Germany. I studied product design at Bauhaus University Weimar. Product design was initially a plan B, but it turned out to be great so I am very happy with my decision. It was a 4-year Bachelor’s but I nearly studied 5 years because I was on exchange and did an internship in Gothenburg, Sweden."
How did you decide to come to Lund University?
"I like the vibe in Sweden. Also, Scandinavian design is a big thing in Europe and the rest of the world as well. I graduated in 2016 and worked in between. I wanted to learn more by working so I took a job in interior design before I applied to Lund."
How do you like the Industrial Design Programme?
"I started the programme during the Covid pandemic, which of course made the situation a bit different. But even during Covid, the staff is doing their best to give us the best experience possible. I think the programme has a lot of strong points. The programme usually has several exhibitions. Due to the Covid-pandemic, we have only had one so far. There is also a project with NASA and within that, we have a field trip to the Space Center in Houston planned."
What is your favourite part of the programme?
"I would say the project with NASA and the part where you can go to workshops are great. Last semester, due to the fact we couldn’t exhibit in Milan due to the pandemic, the professors made a project that we could attend instead. Also, the guest lecturers are great. This provides us with great networking opportunities that I never had during my previous studies."
How do you like living in Sweden? Do you have any advice for prospective students?
"It is good! It was really important for me to get connections with Swedes here to make this place feel like home. I am happy to say nearly all of my friends that I hang out with here are Swedes. I would advise you to make sure you have the right documents so that you can get your Personal Number and insurance."
Do you have any plans after your studies?
"I definitely want to stay in Sweden. A dream situation would be finding a job in Copenhagen and live in Malmö."
